Treadmills have become a popular item to have at home, but they are not safe for small children. When they malfunction they can be dangerous to anybody.
Risk to children
When the treadmill is in an unlocked room of the home, a child might easily investigate it. Treadmills are easy to start, but for a small child they're hard to stop. Children can get their hands caught in the treadmill belt, usually at the back area where the belt moves under the machine. This causes friction burns to the child's hands, fingers, and arms as the fast-moving treadmill belt literally rubs the skin away.
In many cases, surgery has been required to repair the children's hands.
Malfunctioning machines
Injuries have been caused when the treadmill suddenly speeds up, causing the person to lose their footing and fall. This can create back and neck injuries and broken bones.
On other occasions, the treadmill running at a fast speed suddenly stopped, causing the person to fall forward and hit their head on the display panel. Some fell further, twisting their backs and suffering severe spinal injures.
Health clubs
Many people belong to a gym or health club and use those treadmills. These institutions have an obligation to maintain and inspect their equipment, including their treadmills. When they malfunction, a lawsuit could be brought against the club or spa, as well as the treadmill manufacturer.
If the treadmill was in a health club or gym, there are a variety of possible defendants, such as:
- The city that runs the gym
- The recreation center, if it's a private one
- The park district
- The manufacturer of the treadmill
- The company that serviced the treadmill
You could potentially receive compensation for your medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering, if negligence can be established on the part of the defendant(s).
If you've been injured on a treadmill, the facts need to be investigated. Contact Rockford personal injury attorney Barry Doyle for your free legal consultation. No recovery, no fee.
