South Side Pedestrian Hit and Killed in Mount Greenwood

March 15, 2011 - A pedestrian was killed Monday morning when he was hit by a car while walking near his home. According to a report at the Chicago Breaking News Center, the pedestrian accident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on the Far South Side of Chicago.

Police say the victim was walking along South Kedzie Avenue in Mount Greenwood when he fell or stumbled into the path of a Chevrolet that was driving on 111^th Street. The victim struck the car's passenger side and was thrown onto the pavement. The driver of the Chevrolet, a man who has not been identified, parked his car and ran to a nearby fire station for assistance.

Firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene to find that the victim had already died. He was transported to the office of the Cook County Medical Examiner for an autopsy. The victim has been identified as a 63-year-old man from Chicago. Police say he lived close to the accident scene on South Whipple Street.

The Chicago Police Department is continuing to investigate this fatal pedestrian accident and will release more information if and when it becomes available.
