Icy Weather in Chicago Area Causes Over 100 Car Accidents

February 23, 2011 - Numerous people suffered personal injuries on Monday night after icy weather swept the Chicago area, leading to dozens of car accidents. According to a report at the Chicago Breaking News Center, the Illinois State Police reported more than 100 weather-related car accidents on Monday night alone in Cook County and the surrounding areas.
Most of the car accidents were minor and involved drivers losing control of their vehicles. These vehicles often drifted into ditches or spun off the road, but did not result in any injuries. However, troopers reported several serious car accidents, including one in suburban Schaumburg that killed one man.
Troopers say the victim was driving on Route 53 when he slid into the center median in the northbound lane near Interstate 90. After getting out to inspect his vehicle, he was hit by another car that had also lost control. That car threw him over the center median, where he was hit and dragged by a vehicle headed southbound on Route 53. The victim was identified as a 35-year-old man from Round Lake. No other injuries were reported in this particular crash, and state troopers do not have precise figures on how many people were injured on Monday night.
