Elderly Man Killed By SUV Outside Prospect Heights Nursing Home

February 24, 2011 - An elderly man died on Tuesday after he was hit by an SUV while wandering outside his nursery home in Prospect Heights. According to a report at the Chicago Breaking News Center, the victim was attempting to cross the street when he was hit shortly before 11 p.m. on Tuesday night.
Police say the pedestrian accident victim was a patient at Emeritus, a nursing home on Euclid Avenue. He apparently walked out of the facility unsupervised with his walker and attempted to cross Euclid Avenue at the intersection with Hemlock Lane. A passing motorist in a Ford Escape pulled over and attempted to get the man out of the road, but the witness was unable to reach the victim before he was struck by an Audi SUV. After hitting the elderly man, the Audi crashed into the Ford Escape. Neither driver suffered personal injuries.
The victim was transported by ambulance to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he unfortunately died from his injuries. He has been identified as a 78-year-old man who was a resident of the Emeritus nursing home for more than 7 years. The Prospect Heights Police Department is investigating this fatal pedestrian accident.
