Drunk Driver Found Guilty in Steger DUI Crash

February 24, 2011 - The man who caused a fatal DUI car accident that killed a 5-year-old boy was found guilty of aggravated drunk driving on Tuesday. According to a report at the Chicago Breaking News Center, the 23-year-old man faces a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.
The charges stem from a DUI accident last May in Steger. The accused was a passenger in a car driven by his girlfriend when the vehicle was pulled over by officers with the Chicago Heights Police Department. The girlfriend was arrested for driving with a suspended license, and officers told the boyfriend to go home with the woman's 5-year-old son.
The officers later said that there was no indication that the man had been drinking. Less than half an hour later, the driver crashed the car in the tree, killing the 5-year-old child in the backseat. Officers who responded to that accident claimed the driver smelled of alcohol and was visibly intoxicated.
The jury deliberated for 9 hours before returning a guilty verdict. The defense had tried to argue that the Chicago Heights Police Department should be held responsible for the child's death. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
