When Neck Fusion is Necessary After an Illinois Car Accident (Part A)

It is not uncommon to sustain a neck injury even in a minor Chicago car accident. However if the impact was severe, the neck injury may be serious enough that it requires neck surgery. A Chicago car crash lawyer can carefully evaluate the details in your case to determine if you should file an Illinois personal injury claim.

When the negligence of another causes you to be injured in a Chicago car accident, that person may be held liable for the damages you suffer as a result. Damages can include not only your medical expenses and lost wages but other types of loss such as disability.

Overview of a Neck Fusion

One type of neck surgery that may be necessary is neck fusion. This entails joining bones in the neck together, or fusing them together.

This is a serious type of surgery and is only done when other options aren't available. This type of neck surgery may be done when there is a herniated disc or spinal stenosis.

A herniated disc puts pressure on the nerves and can lead to severe pain. Spinal stenosis puts pressure on the spinal cord, which can also be extremely painful. Neck pain in and of itself may not warrant a procedure such as neck fusion as other options such as physical therapy may be sufficient.

Types of Neck Fusion Surgeries

There are different types of neck fusion surgeries including:

  • removal of the vertebrae and fusing the spine;
  • bone graft (bridges the adjacent vertebrae and promotes new bone growth);
  • removal of spinal disc and adjacent vertebrae is fused; and
  • vertebrae held together with metal implants until new bone growth occurs.

This type of neck surgery can be done either through the back of the neck, (posterior), or through the front (anterior). Surgery and recovery may be costly and but the expenses may be recoverable through an Illinois personal injury claim if your neck injury was the result of a Chicago car accident or other traumatic event caused by negligence.
