Illinois Drug Injury Claims Relating to Hydroxycut (Part A)

When a dangerous drug or dietary supplement causes injuries to an individual, they may be entitled to receive compensation in an Illinois product liability claim. Hydroxycut is one type of potentially dangerous drug that has been linked to serious side effects and even fatalities.

A Chicago personal injury lawyer can evaluate your case to determine if the injuries you sustained were connected to your having taken Hydroxycut. If so, a Chicago personal injury lawyer can then assist you with the filing of your Illinois product liability claim.

An Overview of Hydroxycut: A Potentially Dangerous Drug

Hydroxycut, produced by Iovate Health Sciences Inc., is a weight loss product (i.e. diet pill) that has been successful in helping many people to lose weight. It is one of the top selling weight loss products sold in the United States. Unfortunately, it also has the potential to be a dangerous drug, causing serious illness and even death in some cases.

On May 1, 2009, the FDA issued a warning to consumers that they should stop using Hydroxycut products because of the risk of liver damage. At the time Iovate Health Sciences Inc. agreed to recall all Hydroxycut products from the market.

This recall came after the FDA received 23 reports of health problems from individuals who took Hydroxycut.
The health problems ranged from minor, such as jaundice, to more serious health problems such as liver damage. One of the reports indicated the need for a liver transplant. There was also one report of a death because of liver failure.

Additionally, Hydroxycut was found to cause cardiovascular disorders, seizures and rhabdomyolysis.
Rhabdomyolysis is muscle damage that can eventually lead to other more serious problems such as kidney failure.

Some patients who used the recommended dosage listed on the bottle of Hydroxycut experienced liver injury with symptoms including:

  • jaundice;
  • brownish-colored urine;
  • light-colored stools;
  • vomiting;
  • nausea;
  • weakness;
  • severe fatigue;
  • abdominal pain;
  • loss of appetite; and
  • itching.
