Overview of Fosamax

Fosamax is a bisphosphonate tablet used to treat osteoporosis. It is most often used among postmenopausal women. While it has proven effective in preventing bone fractures, there are serious Fosamax side effects that may outweigh the benefits of this dangerous prescription drug.

Fosamax Side Effects and Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

The most serious side effect reported is osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). This is a serious bone disease where a loss of blood to the jaw's bone tissue results in tissue death and eventually, collapse of the bone.

ONJ is a very painful condition. If it is left untreated or undetected, it can lead to complete loss of bone tissue and an irreversible collapse of the jaw joint.

Symptoms of ONJ may include:

• pain in the jaw area;
• loosening of teeth;
• numbness;
• infections of soft tissue; and
• bone exposure within the oral cavity.

One of the first reported cases of ONJ as a result of taking Fosamax occurred when a 60-year-old Florida woman developed a severe case. Her ONJ caused her mouth to rot and jaw bone to become exposed.
