When Anemia Drugs Cause Serious Illness (Part A)

Anemia drugs are not only used to treat a lack of red blood cells in the body but they have also been used to help treat individuals with kidney disease and diabetes. Unfortunately, anemia drugs have also been linked to serious heart problems and even death.

Risks of Anemia Drugs

Particular brands of anemia drugs have been linked to an increased risk of stroke, despite their ability to help treat early stages of kidney failure.

Procrit, Epogen and Aranesp are some anemia drugs that have been found to increase the risk of heart problems. Recently, an independent panel of experts had an overwhelming majority vote that the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) continue to give approval for these drugs to treat chronic kidney disease.

In September 2010, the New England Medical Journal published a study concerning the risk of stroke in taking these anemia drugs. While the FDA typically follows recommendations by its expert panel, this isn't required. Although the FDA sought advice on the need for restrictions or for stronger warnings, it has decided to continue the approval of these anemia drugs.

With the increased risk of heart problems, patients should discuss all options with their doctors to make sure that these risks don't outweigh the benefits. If complications from these anemia drugs do arise, a dangerous drug claim may be the next course of action.
