I am not sure whether to buy uninsured motorist coverage. Why should I?

The short answer is yes, you should buy uninsured motorist coverage.  Definitely.

There are a number of reasons for this:

• This is a coverage which directly benefits you and your family.  It applies when you or a relative living with you have been involved in either an Illinois hit-and-run accident or an accident with a driver who did not have insurance.  Liability insurance coverage is there to protect you  if you are to blame, but uninsured motorist coverage benefits you when you are the victim of an accident in Illinois with a driver who has no coverage.
• It is cheap insurance coverage compared to the other types of coverage, such as liability, property damage, or collision.  I was doing some research on-line about buying car insurance recently, and received quotes of less than $100 for six months of coverage up to $250,000 for a car in Chicago.  Do your research on this, and you will probably be surprised how affordable it is.
• During hard economic times, people have to make choices about where they are going to spend their money, and some people will decide to save their car insurance premium by going without, even though Illinois has a mandatory auto insurance.  The chances of getting into a car crash with an uninsured driver are much higher during hard times.
