When a new medication is developed, enormous amounts of money are first spent on research and testing, before the medication can be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Drug monitoring
When that new drug is then placed on the market, it continues to be monitored by the FDA. The manufacturer must send post-marketing reports, and by this means the FDA learns of any feedback from consumers and medical professionals as to side effects, medical errors or quality control.
The drug manufacturer cannot necessarily anticipate everything that might develop after the drug is on the open market. If an unanticipated side effect shows up that seems to the FDA to be serious enough, they issue a warning, or ask the manufacturer to change the label information on the bottle. If the adverse events are serious enough, a product recall may result.
