What is Cerebral Palsy?
It's a type of brain damage that becomes evident in some babies very soon after birth. It causes inability to control muscle movement.
Causes of Cerebral Palsy during birth
Modern obstetrical care, although it has reduced infant mortality rates, has not reduced incidence of cerebral palsy. Any circumstance during pregnancy or birth which lowers the amount of oxygen available to the baby can cause brain damage, which may take the form of cerebral palsy.
There are a number of errors during the delivery process which may result in cerebral palsy:
- Leaving the baby in the birth canal too long
- Excessive use of vacuum extraction
- Improper use of forceps
- Failure to recognize signs of fetal distress
- Failure to order a C-section
- Failure to recognize dangerous fetal heart rate fluctuations
- Failure to treat jaundice or meningitis
- Failure to remedy a prolapsed cord
Medical negligence
Many people are unaware that cerebral palsy in infants is too often the result of a medical mistake. Thousands of innocent babies suffer the severe effects of cerebral palsy after a labor nurse or delivery doctor acts carelessly, makes a bad decision, or fails to act when they should.
Is your child's cerebral palsy the result of negligence? What could your doctor have done differently to avoid the injuries that cause cerebral palsy? These are questions which must be answered
To determine whether there is a reasonable basis for a malpractice case, we will need to review the mother's prenatal records, the delivery records for both the mother and child (including fetal monitoring strips), and the child's entire medical chart after birth.
Around 500,000 people in this country are currently struggling with the effects of Cerebral Palsy. The amount of special care and assistance needed for a cerebral palsy victim can run into the millions of dollars. Don't struggle with this financial disaster alone. You could be entitled to compensation that would make these expenses affordable.
Chicago birth injury attorney Barry Doyle will help you hold negligent doctors responsible for your child's injury. Contact him today for your free legal consultation. No recovery, no fee.
