Severe brain injury is known as traumatic brain injury (TBI), and can be caused either by a blow to the head, or by something breaking the skull and entering the brain (penetrating head injury). A surprising number of people suffer brain injury without a direct blow to the head or a penetrating injury.
It is not known how many people sustain brain injury each year, because not all people go to an emergency room for treatment. But it's been estimated based on emergency room visits, that about 1.4 million people suffer a brain injury each year.
Most common causes
- Falls - about 30%
- Road accidents - about 20%
- Other blows to the head - about 20%
- Assaults - about 11%
Males are more likely to receive a brain injury than females, and there are two age groups at higher risk: under 4 years old, and the late teen years.
Prolonged aftermath
Since the brain has so many functions, and is central to our most ordinary daily activities, the consequences of TBI can be lifelong and disabling. We can be permanently impaired in:
- Memory
- Speech
- Emotions
- Rational thought
- Movement
- Ability to sense things such as heat, cold, or pain
Many people need lifelong assistance, and can no longer hold the employment they previously had. The American Brain Injury Association estimates that about 5.3% of Americans are living with permanent disability resulting from a TBI.
Brain injury compensation
If you or someone you love has sustained a TBI, you know how expensive treatment and subsequent daily therapy and living assistance can be. If you suffered that injury because of another person's carelessness or negligence, you may be able to claim compensation by filing a personal injury lawsuit.
You could potentially be compensated for medical costs, lost wages (past and future) and pain and suffering.
