Woman Dies in Fiery Crash on the South Side

September 7, 2010 - South Side - A woman died Sunday morning following a car accident in the Englewood neighborhood.

The Chicago Breaking News Center
reports that the car crash occurred at just before 11 a.m. at the intersection of 63rd and Wallace streets.  The woman was apparently travelling eastbound when she struck another vehicle head-on in the westbound lane at the viaduct at Wallace.

According to a witness on the scene, a man attempted to free the woman from her car but was forced to retreat when the vehicle caught fire. Unfortunately, the woman could not escape in time. She died on the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured in the accident.

A security guard tried to put out the flaming vehicle with a fire extinguisher before emergency crews had arrived, but with no success.

"I saw smoke then [the car] burst into flames," the witness stated, "It was like a movie. Everything happened so quick."

The accident remains under investigation at this time.
