Wilmette Teenager Will Serve No Jail Time in DUI Crash

August 6, 2010 - The young woman who hit a fellow classmate with her car and left the victim lying in the road will not serve any time in jail for her crime. According to a report at ABC 7 Chicago, the 18-year-old driver received two months probation and 120 hours of community service after pleading guilty to hit-and-run and DUI.

The charges stem from a crash earlier this year that left a 16-year-old girl with serious personal injuries. The victim was crossing the street in Winnetka when the 18-year-old driver crashed into her and then fled the scene. The driver, who was later arrested at her house, admitted to investigators that she had been smoking marijuana; the drug was also found in her system.

In court on Thursday, the driver read a statement expressing her sorrow at the accident. The victim's family also read an impact statement, in which they called the driver "irresponsible" and "selfish." The victim suffered a serious brain injury in the hit-and-run accident. Even after spending weeks in the hospital, she still has not fully recovered and must attend rehab on a regular basis.
