Victim of Winnetka Hit-and-Run Expected to Survive

May 28, 2010 - A 16-year-old girl who suffered severe personal injuries in a hit-and-run accident is expected to survive, doctors say. According to reports at The Chicago Tribune, the victim was injured on May 14, 2009 in Winnetka when she was hit by a car driven by a classmate. The 18-year-old driver then fled the scene, and she was arrested at home a short time later.

The victim has been receiving treatment for her injuries at NorthShore Evanston Hospital, where she is now in stable condition. Her injuries were severe and included a cracked skull and brain damage. Doctors say the victim is young and otherwise healthy, which should work in her favor as she attempts to recover from her brain injuries. She will receive further treatment at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

The driver of the car who caused the car accident is out on bail while prosecutors prepare a case against her. The 18-year-old is facing numerous charges in conjunction with the pedestrian accident, and she has also admitted that she smoked illegal drugs the day before hitting a classmate with her car and fleeing the scene. Toxicology tests, which will determine if there were any drugs in her system at the time of the accident, are still pending.
