Two Chicago Police Officers Injured in Car Crash

January 11, 2011 - Two police officers were injured in a crash that killed a Chicago man on the South Side. According to a report at the Chicago Sun-Times, the accident was caused by a reckless driver who ran a red light. The fatal car accident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on Monday morning.

The Chicago police officers were patrolling in a squad car when another vehicle blew through a red light on South Indiana Avenue and crashed into the police car. The car then proceeded to crash into a utility pole. In total, 5 people were injured in the car accident, including the 2 police officers.

There were 3 people in the car that ran the red light, including a 25-year-old man who died shortly after the car accident at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Two other passengers in the car were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition. Police have not said who was driving at the time of the crash.

The police officers were transported by ambulance to Christ Hospital. Fortunately, both are expected to survive and they are currently in good condition. There is no word on whether or not alcohol played a role in this fatal accident.

Police cars have partitions (called a cage), some taxicabs have partitions... is it possible the partitions do not comply with minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards?
