July 15, 2010 - An intersection on Chicago's Northwest Side that has become notorious as the site for many accidents is in the news again. According to a report at the Edison Norwood Times Review, a semi-truck became stuck on the train tracks and was hit by a train at the intersection of Nagle Avenue and Northwest Highway.
The train accident occurred at 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning. Police say the semi-truck was stuck on the tracks because traffic was stopped in front of him and there was no room for him to back up. The truck driver was able to jump from the truck before the collision occurred, so he was able to avoid injury. In addition, no injuries were reported on the train.
The Illinois Commerce Commission has previously said that the Nagle Avenue and Northwest Highway intersection is one of the most dangerous in Chicago. In the last 5 years, 5 train accidents have been reported in that intersection. Local residents believe the intersection is so dangerous because traffic lights in the area are poorly timed.
