August 2, 2010 - Three women died Friday morning in a horrible car accident that police say was caused by a hit-and-run driver. According to a report at My Fox Chicago, witnesses saw a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo speeding down West 47th Street on the city's Southwest Side shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Friday morning.
Police say the car was being chased by another vehicle, which may or may not have physically hit the Chevrolet sedan before it crashed into a light pole. Witnesses say the car burst into flames immediately after the collision. According to NBC Chicago, the witnesses attempted to break the car's windows to rescue the victims, but the flames were too hot. Witnesses described the horror of seeing the women in the car but being powerless to help them.
The other car involved fled the scene after the accident. Police have not released the identities of the victims, but all three occupants of the Chevrolet car were killed in the accident. Authorities have identified them only as women in their 20s. Autopsies were conducted late Friday. The Major Accident Investigation Unit with the Chicago Police Department continues to investigate this fatal car crash, and deputies will be interviewing witnesses to learn more about the second vehicle involved in this tragic hit and run crash. More information will be added if and when it becomes available.
