Teenager Involved in Winnetka Hit-and-Run Charged with DUI

June 15, 2010 - The teenage driver who hit a classmate with her car and then fled the scene is facing new charges related to the accident. According to reports at CBS 2 Chicago, the Cook County State Attorney charged the 18-year-old with two counts of driving under the influence on Monday after toxicology tests detected marijuana in her system. She was already facing charges of failing to report an accident, failing to give aid and several traffic violations.

The teenager was driving on Winnetka Avenue in mid-May when she hit a 16-year-old classmate who also attended New Trier High School. The driver fled the scene and was later arrested at home. The victim suffered serious personal injuries, including brain damage, and was in the hospital for several weeks. She faces a lengthy recovery, although she is now at home with her family.

If the female driver is convicted of the charges facing her, the 18-year-old could spend up to 3 years in prison. Her next court date is scheduled for July 8, 2010.

The latest statistics from the NHTSA show that nearly 40% of all fatal accidents involve drunk drivers. This is a stunning statistic. As a personal injury lawyer in South Carolina, I can tell you a drunk driver that causes an accident that leaves a severely injured victim as described here, could face up to fifteen years in prison under South Carolina's revised DUI law.
