Teen Charged in Winnetka Hit-and-Run Held on Bail

May 18, 2010 - The teenager charged in a serious hit-and-run accident remains in jail Monday night after a Cook County judge set her bail at $500,000. According to reports at Fox Chicago News, an 18-year-old hit a fellow teenager on Friday afternoon and then failed to stop after the accident.

Police have identified the victim as a 16-year-old female who attends the same school as the person that struck her. The pedestrian victim has already undergone several brain surgeries and she remains in critical condition.

In court on Monday, defense lawyers for the driver said she was scared when she fled the scene after hitting the victim. Police were able to apprehend her based on eyewitnesses, who saw the pedestrian hit-and-run accident and took down the 18-year-old's license plate. The driver has also admitted to taking illegal drugs the day before the accident. Toxicology tests, which will show if there were any illegal substances in her body at the time of the car accident, are still pending. The driver will remain in jail until her next hearing on Thursday.
