Serious Bus Crash in Chicago Injures More Than 30 People

October 11, 2010 - More than 30 people were injured over the weekend when a packed bus crashed into a row of trees in Chicago. According to a report at the Chicago Breaking News Center, the bus was full when the accident occurred around 6 p.m. on Saturday night. The bus was operated by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and was running on the Jackson Park Express line.

The police department has not said what caused this serious bus accident, but witnesses told reporters that the bus driver appeared to have problems moving the steering wheel. Several bus passengers apparently tried to help her when they saw that the steering wheel was stuck. The bus was driving on Lake Shore Drive when it suddenly ran off the road and crashed into a row of pine trees. Passengers said in a report aired on MSNBC that the trees actually prevented a more serious crash, since they likely prevented the bus from rolling.

More than 70 people were on the bus when it crashed, and at least 30 suffered personal injuries. Many of those people were not seriously hurt, but several victims were admitted to local hospitals with serious personal injuries. Four victims are currently in critical condition, including one that is being treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Twelve other victims are in fair-to-serious condition.
