Rockford TV station addresses motorcycle insurance issues

The Rockford affiliate of NBC ran a piece the other day about some of the basics of buying motorcycle insurance and some of the ways you can keep your rates down.  This is a timely article as the weather improves and motorcyclists start getting back on the road again.

There are a few points I would add:  there is no mention of medical payments insurance, which is something that you should get if your carrier offers it to motorcyclists.  It is a no-fault coverage which pays your medical bills up to the policy limits in the event of any kind of accident.  Given that many motorcyclists are seriously hurt in crashes of all kinds, it is an important coverage for you to have if you are going to ride a motorcycle.

Second, you should buy as much underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage as your carrier will sell you.  Every rider knows someone or has heard of someone who has been seriously hurt.  Uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist coverage protects you and your family in the event of a serious accident.  Underinsured motorist coverage is important because so many accidents are simply the product of drivers failing to see motorcycle riders.
