One Injured, One Killed in I-57 Truck Accident

August 20, 2010 - Peotone Township - One man was killed in a truck accident Thursday on Interstate 57.

The Herald-News reports that the truck crash happened at about 9:20 AM on Thursday morning, close to the 33 mile marker; Manhattan-Monee road and Wilmington-Peotone road. One semi-truck collided with the rear of a second semi-truck. The truck that rear-ended the other then caught fire and was almost immediately engulfed in flames. Both trucks were headed southbound at the time of the truck accident.

The 30-year-old man who was driving the truck that caught on fire was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the rear-ended truck had to be taken to St. James Hospital, though he incurred no life-threatening injuries.

The truck crash also caused traffic to be detoured to Route 50. All southbound lanes on the interstate had to be shut down for about 5 hours, according to State Police Trooper Mark Dorencz.
