Nearly 10 People Injured in I-57/I-80 Interchange Crashes

January 10, 2011 - At least 10 people suffered personal injuries on Thursday morning in a string of car accidents on an ice-covered freeway interchange. According to a report at My Fox Chicago, there were 18 separate car accidents at the interchange between I-57 and I-80 over the course of several hours.

Investigators with the Illinois State Police say most of these crashes were weather-related. It was snowing on Thursday morning, and the busy interchange was blanketed with snow and ice. In one accident, a truck driver lost control of his semi and jackknifed near the exit for Torrence Avenue, which shut down portions of the freeway until nearly 1 p.m.

In another accident, the driver of a pickup truck lost control on I-294 and crashed into a tree at Glenwood Dyer Road. Two people suffered personal injuries in this crash, and both received treatment at Saint Margaret Mercy Healthcare Center.

Police say at least 10 people were injured in these various car crashes. The identities of the victims have not been released. Fortunately, all of those injured are expected to survive.
