In Arizona, a motorcycle rider suffered a head injury when his motorcycle was hit by a car which was trying to make a left turn as it pulled out of a parking lot for a business. The rider was thrown from the bike and suffered a serious head injury due to the motorcycle accident. He had to be air-lifted from the scene.
I have noted many times in my blog that one of the main causes of serious motorcycle accidents is the failure of drivers of cars to see and yield the right-of-way to motorcycle riders. This usually results in a car driver making a left hand turn in front of a motorcycle or pulling in front of a motorcycle from a side street, or as in this case, from a parking lot.
In my opinion, these kinds of motorcycle accidents happen more frequently with cars that emerge from parking lots and fail to yield the right-of-way to a motorcyclist and are trying to make a left hand turn onto the adjoining road. This is because they are trying to avoid traffic coming from their left and merge with traffic coming from their right, and having to make judgments about the flow of traffic in both directions can cause the driver to pay inadequate attention for motorcycles on the road. This is certainly a common fact pattern for motorcycle accidents, and in particular, wrongful death motorcycle accidents.
