In Rockford, a motorcycle rider from Machesney Park was seriously injured when a car made a left hand turn in front of him at the intersection of Apawamis and Mulford Road. He was taken to St. Anthony Medical Center where he was reported to be in critical condition due to injuries sustained in the
motorcycle crash. The driver of left-turning vehicle was ticketed.
This kind of accident is sadly all too common an occurrence for motorcycle riders in Illinois. Multiple studies have confirmed that one of the leading causes of multi-vehicle accidents involving motorcycles is the simple failure of the driver of the car to see the motorcycle rider. The result of this that cars end up turning left in front of the motorcycle rider or pulling out of driveways or side streets in front of the motorcycle. When this happens, serious injuries and
wrongful death frequently result due to the fact that motorcycle riders are not protected from the impact and are many times thrown from their motorcycles.
The only real solution to this is increased awareness of motorcycles on the part of car drivers, a difficult solution when distracted driving is becoming a more and more significant issue.
