Mother of 5-Year-Old Killed in DUI Crash Speaks Out

May 20, 2010 - The mother of a 5-year-old boy who was killed in an alcohol-related crash last week in Steger is sharing her side of the story. According to reports at My Fox Chicago, the boy's mother is insisting that she told police officers that her boyfriend was intoxicated before they arrested her and gave him the keys to her car. Her 5-year-old son was strapped in the backset when the boyfriend crashed into a tree less than an hour later, killing the child.

According to the mother, she told the Chicago Heights police officer that she wanted to take her son with her, but the officer dismissed her concerns. The mother was taken into custody because she was driving with a suspended license. The police officer has yet to be identified, but the Chicago Heights Police Department maintains that the mother did not say her boyfriend had been drinking. They also said that there was no indication that he was intoxicated.

The boyfriend is facing a variety of charges in connection with this fatal DUI accident, including aggravated DUI. The mother is suing the Chicago Heights Police Department for its role in her son's death.
