September 17, 2010 – Libertyville, IL – Two children and their mother were sent to the hospital Wednesday morning after being struck by a fire truck.The Chicago Breaking News Center reports that the fire truck accident occurred at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and Cook Avenue. A spokesperson from the Libertyville Police Department said that the mother was crossing the street while towing her two children in a wagon when the accident occurred. The woman and her children were crossing the street at a crosswalk when a fire truck attempting to make a right turn and struck the small family. Police said that the fire truck was moving at a very slow speed when it hit them. As the truck inched around the turn, its driver failed to notice the mother and children in the crosswalk before the vehicle.The mother was hit and the children’s wagon was overturned and became stuck underneath the fire truck. Police stated that the mother screamed on impact, causing the fire truck to come to an immediate stop.Thankfully, all three victims suffered only minor injuries. The mother and 1 of the children were transported to Advocate Condell Medical center immediately following the accident, but both have since been released.The fire truck’s driver has been temporarily reassigned to desk duties. The fire department will be conducting an internal review of the incident and working with the local police department. The driver of the fire truck was cited for failing to obey a traffic signal.
