October 6, 2010 - A teenage boy suffered serious personal injuries on Tuesday when he was hit by a Metra train while attempting to cross the train tracks. According to a report at the Chicago Breaking News Center, the pedestrian accident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
Police are still investigating this tragic accident, but they believe that the victim was crossing the train tracks with a group of other teenagers when he was hit by the train. The teens were attempting to cross the tracks near Nagle Avenue and Northwest Highway. The Metra train, running on the Northwest line, was traveling from Harvard to downtown Chicago and was due to arrive downtown shortly before 3:30 p.m.
The victim has not yet been identified, but the Chicago Breaking News Center reports that the scene of the accident is near Taft High School. It is believed that --- given the time of day that the accident occurred -- the teenage boys may have been heading home from school. The victim is currently receiving treatment for extensive injuries at Lutheran General Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.
The area near Nagle Avenue has seen nearly half a dozen train accidents since 2005, and it's listed as one of the most dangerous train crossings in the Chicago area.
