Large Pileup on I-57 Leaves 3 in Critical Condition

December 14, 2010 - A large car pileup on Interstate 57 seriously injured three people on Sunday night. As reported in the Southtown Star, the multiple-vehicle accident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on the South Side of Chicago.

Officers with the Illinois State Police say the vehicles were traveling on Interstate 57 when the collision happened near the 99^th Street exit. Weather may be a factor in this serious crash, as the Chicago area received a large amount of snow over the weekend and roads were icy. The accident also occurred at night, when visibility may have been compromised. At least 3 people suffered personal injuries and were transported by ambulance to Stroger Hospital. Their identities have not yet been released, but all of the victims are currently in critical condition.

It is not yet known how many people were involved in this accident, or if any other passengers suffered minor injuries. In total, 5 vehicles were involved in this serious crash. The Illinois State Police is still investigating to determine how the crash occurred and if weather may have been a factor. It is not yet clear who was at fault.
