La Grange Woman Killed in Train Accident

June 10, 2010 - A 43-year-old woman died on Monday after she was hit by a train in La Grange. According to reports at The Chicago Sun-Times, the victim purposefully walked into the path of the Amtrak train. The accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

Reports indicate that the woman was standing on a pedestrian platform in the Stone Avenue station near West Burlington Avenue; when the train arrived, she stepped off the platform onto the train tracks. The train's engineer was unable to bring the train to a halt before striking the woman. Police say the 43-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Amtrak train that struck and killed the women runs on the same track as the Metra BNSF line, so the accident resulted in the cancellation and delay of several Metra trains. In total, the train track was closed for nearly 2 hours.

Police have not released any further information about the woman in this case or why she may have attempted suicide. According to reports, the engineer did everything in his power to slow the train and avoid hitting her.
