La Grange Left-Turn Collision Raises Questions

A two-vehicle collision in La Grange earlier this month is a prime example of how conflicting viewpoints can hinder the determination of blame and accountability. About 11:50am on Saturday, July 16, two vehicles collided at the intersection of Kensington and Ogden Avenues, which is about a half mile west of Shawmut Park in the Cook County village of La Grange. Each car was being driven by a man, and each was occupied by a female passenger. One car, whose occupants were from Rolling Meadows, was traveling east on Ogden when it struck another car that was making a left-turn to go south on Kensington. The Rolling Meadows occupants were both taken to nearby hospitals along with the female passenger in the left-turning car, who was from La Grange (as was the driver of that car).

It appears that both drivers had a green light. But here's where the disagreement arises: the Rolling Meadows driver claims that the La Grange driver failed to yield the right-of-way and turned in front of him, which caused the crash. However, the La Grange driver claims that while he was turning left on a yellow light, the other car sped up trying to beat the light; so therefore, the Rolling Meadows driver should be held liable for the collision.

It will take more facts that what are currently known to figure out which vehicle was at fault in the wreck, or whether both drivers should share responsibility to some degree. The outcome of this investigation will have a direct bearing on any future personal injury lawsuits that may be filed by any of the injured victims.
