Fleeing Driver Struck by Car on Dan Ryan Expressway

February 1, 2011 - A driver who caused a hit and run accident on Sunday was seriously injured when he attempted to flee the scene on foot and was hit by another car. According to a report at the Chicago Tribune, the driver is facing a number of charges in connection with the hit and run accident. The accidents occurred shortly before 6:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Police say the suspect was driving on South Wentworth Avenue in Chicago when he crashed into a parked car. The car was unoccupied at the time. The driver then fled the scene and abandoned his vehicle near 50^th Street. He then ran across the Dan Ryan Expressway, where police say he tried to gain access to the CTA station nearby. After unsuccessfully scaling a fence, the suspect ran back across the Expressway near 46^th Street, where he was hit by a car. The hit and run driver, who has been identified as a 25-year-old man who lives on South Essex Avenue, is being treated for serious personal injuries at Stroger Hospital. Police say he is in critical condition.

The driver is facing numerous charges, including running a red light, driving without a license or insurance, leaving the scene of an accident, trespassing and others. He is due in court on Feb. 28.
