Five Injured After SUV Flips in Lake Shore Crash

September 8, 2010 - Lake Shore - An SUV rolled off of Stevenson Expressway and onto Lake Shore Drive Sunday night, sending 5 people to the hospital.

The Chicago Sun Times
reports that the accident happened at around 9 p.m. Sunday on the Stevenson Expressway, or Interstate 55. An SUV was travelling northbound on the interstate when its driver lost control of the vehicle and caused it to flip over. The SUV came to rest on Lake Shore Drive.

Seven people were in the SUV at the time of the accident. According to emergency response official on the scene, 5 of those people have been sent to the hospital with serious-to-critical injuries. Three of the injured were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The remaining 2 were transported to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in Cook County.

Not all of the ages and genders of those involved in the SUV crash were readily available, but at least 3 of the injured victims were teenagers. Their ages have been confirmed as 14, 16, and 17 year old.

The driver of the SUV, who is 18-year-old, could face citations, according to Illinois State Police, since 2 of the young passengers were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the car accident.

The SUV rollover crash remains under investigation. State Police believe that speed was a factor in the accident. The involvement of alcohol, however, is not suspected at this time.
