The problem arises when drunk drivers are involved - because their behavior is completely unpredictable.
Such was the case in Aurora last month when a 23-year old man caused an auto accident which seriously injured a 21-year old woman. On October 29 at around 7:45am, the man was driving eastbound on Route 34 at a speed of approximately 75 miles per hour. According to police, the man swerved his 2004 Chevrolet Impala around a slower-moving car in front of him. In the process, his car hit the curb and then slammed into the driver's side of a 2001 Toyota Camry which was trying to exit from a gas station driveway near Eola Road.
The female driver had to be extricated by first responders using the Jaws of Life before being rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Police said that the blood alcohol content of the 23-year old man was measured at .203, which is more than 2 1/2 times the legal limit in Illinois. The suspect was arrested on charges that included aggravated driving under the influence. There are also reports that the DUI suspect had been drag racing at the time of the crash, though he hasn't yet been charged with that offense.
The crash victim suffered multiple injuries including bleeding on the brain, a fractured skull, and a broken spine. So there's a strong possibility that her recovery could last several weeks or months, and she may not ever gain full control of her mobility or mental functions at all. A personal injury lawsuit could help the woman pay for the substantial medical costs which have already mounted, as well as the expenses which she will undoubtedly incur over the coming months.
