Drunk Driver Causes Crash in Lake View Chicago Neighborhood

June 9, 2010 - Police believe alcohol played a role in a single-vehicle car crash that occurred late on Thursday night. According to reports at The Chicago Sun-Times, the motorist was driving on Lake Shore Drive shortly after 10 p.m. on Thursday when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a cement median. Police say he was driving on the wrong side of the road.

In addition to alcohol, police believe speed may have been a factor in the car accident, as a good section of the concrete divider was destroyed by the man's car. First responders who arrived on the scene used rescue equipment to extricate the driver from the vehicle, which was severely crushed after hitting the cement divider.

He was initially treated at Mount Sinai Hospital before being transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Although his personal injuries are serious, police believe he is expected to survive. No other injuries were reported in this serious car accident.

The driver who caused this crash will likely be charged with driving under the influence, although formal charges have yet to be filed. The driver's identity has not been released.
