Distracted Driver Arrested After Hitting Berwyn Pedestrian

September 24, 2010 - A young woman was arrested this week after police say she hit a pedestrian with her car while talking on a cell phone. According to a report at the Chicago Breaking News Center, the woman was driving on Harlem Avenue in Berwyn when she ran a red light and hit the pedestrian at the intersection with Longcommon Road.

Witnesses told police that the driver was talking on her cell phone in the moments before she ran the red light. The pedestrian accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday.

The driver has been identified as a 20-year-old woman. The pedestrian she hit, a 52-year-old man from Berwyn, suffered serious personal injuries and is now in serious condition at Loyola Medical Center. His injuries include head injuries as well as a broken leg and collar bone. In charging the driver with aggravated reckless driving, the police chief called her "grossly negligent." The driver was arrested after the accident and has posted bail. She is due back in court at the end of September.

The victim remains in the hospital as of Thursday afternoon.
