December 10, 2010 - An official report from the Cook County Sheriff's Department regarding a fatal car crash in October was released on Tuesday. The crash involved a police car and resulted in the death of an 18-year-old boy. According to a report at NBC Chicago, the accident happened in Evergreen Park on Oct. 5.
It is believed that the squad car was pursuing a suspect when it crashed into another vehicle in the intersection of Central Park Avenue and 95th Avenue. The driver of the other car, an 18-year-old boy who attended Morgan Park High School, died in the crash. The report from the Cook County Sheriff's Department says the boy was at fault in the crash because he attempted a left-hand turn without the right of way. The Evergreen Park Police officer involved in the fatal car accident was cleared of any wrongdoing.
Relatives of the victim are outraged at the report. The victim's mother, who has sued the officer involved, says she thinks it is a police cover-up. The officer has never been identified. Questions continue to swirl about whether or not the officer was using his emergency sirens or lights at the time of the crash; the report did not clarify that issue.
