Child ejected from SUV in accident with ambulance

A 2 year old child was ejected from his family's SUV when it was involved in a collision with an ambulance near the intersection of 63rd Street and Kedize in Chicago.  The child was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition.

One of the things that caught my eye about this news story is the fact that the child was ejected from the car in the accident.  One basic principle in automobile design is that cars should be crashworthy.  Crashworthiness means that cars should be designed to helps ensure that the occupants of the vehicle survive a crash.  A very basic part of that vehicle must be designed to keep people inside the vehicle during a crash.  This means that the windows, doors, and restraint system all must keep the occupants inside the vehicle.

Any time a passenger in a car is ejected in an accident and sustains serious injuries or there is a wrongful death, it is worth investiagting whether there is a basis for a product liability suit against the manufacturer of the vehicle.  As an experienced Chicago personal injury lawyer, I would advise the family that the most important thing for them to do is preserve the remains of the vehicle because the loss of the remains may jeopardize their ability to pursue a products liability suit.
