Chicago Cyclist Killed on Dan Ryan Expressway

August 31, 2010 - A cyclist died Sunday night after he was hit by an SUV on the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago. According to a report at the Chicago Sun-Times, the victim was crossing the Dan Ryan Expressway near 55^th Street when he was struck. The accident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. on Sunday night.

Police aren't sure why the cyclist was crossing the busy freeway, but the victim's mother tells the Chicago Sun-Times that he doesn't have a car and often rides his bicycle to work. The victim could not be revived by first responders and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to ABC 7 Chicago, the victim was not wearing a bicycle helmet when he was hit. He has been identified as a 28-year-old man who lives on North Sheridan Road; he is originally from Pennsylvania. The driver of the black Lexus SUV who struck the cyclist has not been identified. Police say the driver is not likely to be charged.

Police have not yet concluded their investigation into this fatal crash, and they are still trying to determine precisely why the victim was on the Dan Ryan Expressway on Sunday night.
