Chicago Bicycle Police Officer Dragged By Fleeing Car

June 21, 2010 - A bicycle officer with the Chicago Police Department suffered personal injuries on Saturday night when he was dragged by a fleeing suspect. According to reports at the Chicago Sun-Times, the officer pulled over a 37-year-old driver for an illegal u-turn. The driver stopped initially but then drove off when the officer approached the vehicle on his official bicycle; the officer was dragged as the suspect attempted to flee the scene.

The bicycle accident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday night on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. After fleeing the scene, the suspect, who was driving a Ford F-150 truck, was apprehended shortly later when he became stuck in traffic. The suspect has been identified as a 37-year-old man from Gary, Indiana. He is facing numerous charges in connection with this accident, including driving under the influence (DUI), aggravated battery, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without a license or insurance.

The police offer is being treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he is expected to survive. His condition is currently unknown, but he was admitted in fair condition.
