Car Crashes Into School Bus on Dan Ryan Expressway, Killing One

February 14, 2011 - One person was killed and two children were seriously injured when a car slammed into a school bus on Wednesday afternoon. According to a report at NBC Chicago, the vehicles were traveling on the Dan Ryan Expressway when the school bus accident occurred shortly after 2:00 p.m.

Police say the school bus, which was not carrying any students at the time of the accident, was stalled on the shoulder when a passenger vehicle crashed into the back of the bus and slid underneath it. The car was trapped under the bus, so the car accident shut down the Dan Ryan Expressway near 73^rd Street for several hours.

The driver of the car, an unidentified woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say she has a lengthy driving record and was driving without a valid driver's license. However, investigators have not said what kind of traffic violations led to the loss of her driver's license.

The victim's children, an 8-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, suffered serious personal injuries and were admitted to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition. Police say the driver of the school bus was not injured.
