Camelot Terrace in Streator issued citation

Camelot Terrace Nursing Home in Streator received an immediate jeopardy citation from the Illinois Department of Public Health last week.  The basis of the citation was a leaking roof and evidence of damage by termites to the facility.  The nursing home owner, Michael Lerner, was disputing the citation.

Mr. Lerner is the operator of other nursing homes in Illinois which have been the subjects of scrutiny.  He also operates Regal Rehab in Oak Lawn which was supposed to have been shut down last spring, but remains open.  He also operates Galesburg Terrace.  His management practices prompted the SEIU to launch a web site, www.lernernogem.org, a reference to GEM Health care, the umbrella organization for the Lerner-owned nursing homes.

The poor conditions at the Camelot facility have potential to cause harm to the residents.  This would have been the basis for the immediate jeopardy citation issued by IDPH.  I have represented the families of other residents to investigate nursing home neglect claims against Mr. Lerner's facilities, including issues with pressure ulcers, and have been troubled by the poor care received by the residents.  I was also surprised to learn that he does not carry liability insurance on the Regal Rehab nursing home, and suspect that this is his standard practice at all of his facilities.

Hopefully, this citation is a sign that the IDPH is taking a closer look at Mr. Lerner's facilities.

I worked there many years ago as a CNA before Mr. Learner took over. I can honestly say I liked it when he came in I got out.He was changing so much and we were working way to short for the safety of our residents. The public has to realize that alot of these residents have no one, no more family. What happens to them? The nursing homes are crowded now. But yes Mr. Learner should have to pay to have these residents moved to a new facility and then pay for the difference in their housing if it is higher than his facility. He also should not be aloud to open or have any more hands in any facilities. I hope he feels bad for the conditions he has put these residents in.

We have started a new web page to highlight Michael Lerner's failure to clean up his act at Camelot Terrace. We are urging members of the community to join us in calling on him to clean up the mold that makes the facility unsafe.

i work at the facility known as camelot terrace in streator il. i have been there for almost 7 yrs. i am so sickened by the way this facilty has gone down hill since i started working there. there is a mold problem and a termite problem, nothing is being done to reconcile these problems, the staff is getting sick the headcount is under 25 and the residents are scared, some of them have no families we are all they have, we have (the cna's) have been called names from community because we dont do anything to solve these problems it is not our responsibility but is the responsibility or michael lerner who chooses the issues at hand. are we wrong for caring for our residents and staff because we dont quit and get out of there like dr.'s tell us too. there is a serious problem there an nothing seems to be getting done, and why he is not shut down.
