Batavia Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Fatal DUI Crash

August 2, 2010 - A young man who killed two of his best friends in an alcohol-related crash in 2007 was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday. According to a report at the Chicago Sun-Times, the 27-year-old man pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI earlier this year.

The charges relate to a crash that occurred on Aug. 4, 2007. Police said that the 27-year-old driver was drunk when he lost control of his car on Dugan Road in Sugar Grove Township. Investigators with an accident reconstruction team testified that the car was going over 100 miles per hour when it crashed into a tree. The DUI accident killed two 21-year-old men, also from Batavia. Later tests showed that the driver had both alcohol and marijuana in his system at the time of the crash. The victims were also under the influence of drugs and alcohol, autopsies showed.

A Kane County judge gave the driver 10 years in jail for the crash, and he will not earn credit for the 900 days he has already served in electric home monitoring.  The sentencing was very emotional, with relatives of the two victims reading impact statements to the court.
