Advanced Bionics Voluntarily Recalls Cochlear Implant Device

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a press release on Nov. 23 that Advanced Bionics has voluntarily recalled one of its models of cochlear implants, a device designed to help restore hearing to children and adults who are deaf.

Advanced Bionics-one of the leading developers for cochlear implant systems-is pulling the HiRes 90K cochlear implant device from the market.
Additionally, Advanced Bionics will work to retrieve all devices that have been distributed but not yet implanted.

The cochlear implant recall comes after 2 reports of the cochlear implant device malfunctioning.
In both cases, it resulted in the wearer experiencing either shocking sensations or severe pain from excessively loud sounds. The defective cochlear implants malfunctioned just days after the patients received them.

Advanced Bionics will continue to work with the FDA as they address the issue with the product defect.

While helpful for many individuals, cochlear implants have the potential to be defective and/or lead to bacterial meningitis in children. If you have been injured after receiving a cochlear implant you may be entitled to file an Illinois product liability claim. In the event of medical negligence, you may have cause to file an Illinois medical malpractice claim. A Chicago injury lawyer can advise you on your legal rights.
