September 14, 2010 - Lake View, IL - Eight people were injured Sunday morning when a porch collapsed underneath them in a Lake View neighborhood.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that there were about 10 people on the porch at the time of the collapse. The porch, a second-story landing on a 2½-story structure, suddenly fell onto the floor below it at 1:23 a.m. Sunday morning.
The Chicago Fire Department responded to the scene of the collapse at a building in the 3700 block of North Ashland. Of the 10 people on the porch, 4 had to be transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, 1 with serious injuries. A spokesman from the Chicago Fire Department stated that 4 more people received medical treatment on the scene.
The spokesman went on to say, "There's an extensive porch system including a deck that went above the roof of the building. The porch was heavy. Something was not quite right with the way it was attached to the wall."
The owner of the building refused to comment on the porch collapse.
