It's really hard to figure out why some people insist on speeding through a red light. Do they somehow think that other traffic will simply stop when the red-light runner bolts into the intersection? Do they consider that another motorist might have the right of way? Or are they just so arrogant that they don't care about the possible consequences?
Unfortunately, none of those questions were answered after a weekend four-vehicle red light accident on the far South Side of Chicago that was caused by a motorist running a red light. On
Sunday morning at about 7:30am, a person driving an Oldsmobile was observed by witnesses to be traveling southbound on South Ewing Avenue at a high rate of speed. The driver ignored a red light at 106th Street and subsequently slammed into a Dodge Durango. The impact began a chain reaction red light accident which also enveloped a Cadillac and a Chevrolet Malibu. The collision, which occurred less than a half mile west of the Indiana state line, sent the driver of the Durango to the hospital in serious-to-critical condition.
Although no citations have been written as of yet, it appears that the Oldsmobile driver is clearly at fault in this
red light accident. Therefore, the injured Durango driver might wish to file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver of the Oldsmobile in order to receive reimbursement for medical expenses, compensation for missed time at work, and perhaps damages for emotional distress.
Thousands of people die each year in
motor vehicle collisions in Illinois and throughout the United States that were caused by reckless motorists running red lights. It's true that some of these red light accidents are the result of drivers misjudging the timing of traffic signals. But many others involve drivers who inexplicably speed through red lights without any perceptible concern for the safety of the drivers around them. These are the very drivers who need to be held accountable for their negligent behavior.
