2009 Motorcycle Helmet Statistics, Illinois

Even though Illinois does not have a motorcycle helmet law, helmets can help save your life in the event of an Illinois motorcycle accident. Recently released statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), details the use of motorcycle helmet and found that helmet use increased in 2009.

Here are some interesting highlights from the study: 

• Helmet use increased overall from 63% in 2008 to 67% in 2009.
• Helmet use in states like Illinois that do not require motorcycle helmets also increased from 50% to 55%.
• Helmet use in rural areas increased to 75% while helmet use in urban areas actually dropped 15 percentage points to 57%.
