Because of the size of tractor trailers, trucking accidents are usually more serious than collisions which take place between other types of vehicles. And two trucking accidents occurred in Illinois on different parts of Interstate 57 just two weeks apart.
Truck Wreck Kills 3 in Mattoon
In the eastern Illinois city of Mattoon, a truck touched off a 9-vehicle collision on I-57 on the evening of May 31, 2010. Police say the truck driver, who was from Louisiana, looked down to check a map and did not see traffic slowing in front of him because of construction. The truck slammed into another vehicle and triggered the chain-reaction accident.
One of the vehicles involved was an SUV which caught fire, killing 3 of its occupants. In all, 13 people were hospitalized in the collision.
4 Injured in Williamson County Truck Collision
Just 14 days later, another tractor trailer was involved in a collision on I-57 - this time in Williamson County in the southwestern part of the state. This truck accident also involved a construction zone.
Traffic had reportedly slowed to one lane near mile marker 61 on the interstate. A tractor trailer was attempting to merge into the single lane when it was rammed from behind and pushed into 3 other cars. A total of 4 people had to be airlifted to area hospitals.
